Any accessible playground near you! Make it happen - spread the word that on September 21, playgrounds everywhere will be welcoming to children of all abilities.
Children are naturally curious about differences but they don't often get to experience them in daily life...so, why not break the ice a little with a simple inclusive play date at the playground?
Spark lifelong compassion; spark curiosity, spark friendships, spark acceptance. Today's inquisitive young minds will change the world someday.
You can use the opportunity to talk about disabilities with your child before the day -- and after. Model inclusive behavior with simple actions such as saying 'hello'.
All too often, we are nervous to say or do the wrong thing around the disabled community...so, instead of learning through experience, we just avoid it. Let's start changing that!
It's so easy! Spark conversations about disability with your child -- and show up on September 21st with a welcoming spirit (and maybe wear some orange to show your support).
We're parents of an amazing young man who is neurodiverse (on the autism spectrum). Our child loves the playground, and loves other kids, but all too often he isn't included or is stared at by his peers not because they want to be mean -- but because they simply have never been around anyone like him and don't know what to do. We'd love to create a little more comfort for everyone at the playground -- and beyond.
